A-IEP
Innovate Public Schools
AI tool helping families translate, summarize, and understand Individualized Education Programs to support advocacy.
Co-designed with families and piloted with 150 caregivers before its February 2026 public release, A-IEP strengthens parents’ ability to advocate effectively and expands equitable access to education support for non-English-speaking students with disabilities.
The AI-EP Project, developed in collaboration with the Burnes Center for Social Change and Innovate Public Schools within the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), aims to simplify the Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for parents. IEPs are crucial for tailoring educational strategies to students with disabilities, involving a multidisciplinary team including educators, specialists, the student, and their family. However, these documents can range from 5 to over 60 pages, presenting significant challenges for non-professional readers and families for whom English is not the first language.
Through extensive interviews with parents and iterative design methods—such as affinity diagramming, service blueprinting, wireframing, prototyping, and user testing—we identified critical needs among families. These include the necessity for timely and accurate translations of IEP documents, which often take over two weeks to obtain, and a clearer understanding of the navigation process, rights, entitlements, and actionable steps to enhance their children's educational experiences.
A-IEP delivers translated summaries in minutes, whereas families previously waited weeks or months to access translated IEP documents.
